Otis, while surfing I came across your website and the section on Amish HeatSurge Heaters. I operate http://amish.net which is based on two definitive photo books about the Amish lifestyle (America's Amish Country) that I co-published with a fellow photographer who resides among the Amish in Holmes County, Ohio. http://amish.net/about.asp I've received a lot of e-mails on this subject and readily saw it for what is has turned out to be. I’ve not met any Amish adults who will willingly pose for images that they know will be published. However, as an old Amish man, a friend, once said, “As long as we don’t know you are taking our photos, we don’t mind.” I see the images in the advertising as the likely way that they were taken OR the people in the images could be Mennonite who dress similarly to the Amish as they both share a common heritage that goes back to 1693 when some members split over the practice of foot washing. I can only imagine how simple our problems would be today in the USA if that was our only issue but I digress.

I enjoyed your article and clearly understand the deception carried about by a slick marketing campaign by non-Amish which essentially proves that you can sell just about anything to some people. It is a very expensive mantel that they are selling! But, if people are happy with it, then I guess that is all that matters. It does seem to be well built!
